Need to Pee During Your Newfoundland Road Trip? Here’s What’s Open.

So many of us are considering road trips this summer. With COVID-19 still rampant around the globe, the idea of jet setting has been put on the back burner for the year. Hopping into a car with your bubble and exploring your own backyard is a more appealing option for many.

There’s one problem with that though – when you’ve had one too many iced teas, where do you stop? One of the first things to close due to the coronavirus was public washrooms. Even though most shops and restaurants have re-opened, there’s still a shortage of bathrooms available and that can throw a real wrench into your road tripping, or even day tripping, plans.

Whereas before you may have just pulled into the closest gas station, that may no longer be an option. And when you gotta go, you gotta go. We’ve started keeping a toilet roll and some dog poop bags (bag your used TP, don’t leave it in the woods – that’s the height of grossness) in the car, just in case of emergencies. But that doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing what’s open and what’s closed.

Jay Lawrence to the rescue! He saw the problem and created an open-sourced map of known restrooms across Newfoundland and Labrador, colour coded to indicate their status. Green are confirmed open, yellow are open with restrictions, red are closed to the public, and grey are unknown.

If you have information about the status of public washrooms near your community and you don’t see it on the map, email wtpnl@jaylawrence.net with the details!

So if you’re planning a road trip in Newfoundland this summer, or even a nice day trip from home, bookmark and visit wtpnl.jaylawrence.net so you’ll know where it’s safe to get that large double double and where you might need to find some bushes on the side of the road.
